In 1977, the Station d'Aquaculture de l'Université de Liègeà Tihange was created in collaboration with Electrabel, with the aim of valorizing the energy resources derived from the hot waters of the cooling circuits of the nuclear power plants next to which it is located.
Today, the CEFRA (Centre de Formation et de Recherches en Aquaculture) is equipped with technological rearing systems for demonstration and research, and for over 35 years has been developing its skills in the study and experimental rearing of some of the most productive tropical species (tilapia, catfish), high value-added temperate water species (perch, pike-perch, koi carp) and restocking species (barbel, chub).

Covering an area of 2,000m2, CEFRA comprises a number of experimental facilities enabling all phases of fish rearing to be carried out, from reproduction to grow-out, including egg incubation and larval rearing. It has 2 greenhouses of 300 and 1000 m², comprising 160 experimental tanks with a volume of 0.2 to 2 m³, 28 outdoor tanks of 1.6 to 5m³, ponds of 200 to 400m², 3 analytical laboratory rooms, 2 aquarium rooms, cold and warm hatchery systems, and various larval rearing systems.
