Upon entering the Complex via the interior of the Opera Gallery on the first floor, the former cinema ticket offices have been replaced by a relaxation area and a large door providing access to the courtyards inaugurated in 2013.
The auditoriums are equipped with high-tech equipment allowing students and teachers to work in optimal conditions and are also designed to allow people with reduced mobility to access them via a lift, access ramps, and floors whose levels have been adapted.
This conversion of a cinema complex into lecture halls demonstrates the potential for adapting this type of 1980s building.
The architect, Daniel Dethier, who oversaw the project, made it a priority to ensure that his design was in line with sustainable development principles: the installation of false walls on the exterior walls and the replacement of window frames ensure the building's insulation, while its energy efficiency is optimized by a high-performance heating system and dual-flow ventilation. (...). He also designed a virtual parallelepiped that can be seen from the outside, with red as its dominant color.
Beyond the technical updates, the architect has subtly rethought the original typology: unlike cinema-goers, who only use the site for the duration of a film, students are expected to live in the building. The most fundamental changes concern the spaces available outside the lecture theaters: the corridors are more than just passageways, they are designed as "pas perdus" adapted to multiple functions. (...)
From the street, the liveliness of the building is perceptible. The lighting fixtures in the ceilings, visible from the outside, play an active part in the complex's constructive image.
