Bookshop (B24)

Campus du Sart Tilman - Quartier HOPITALquartier hopital-carré
Chemin du silence, 2
4000 Liège

* The first university building on the Sart-Tilman campus, the book store was originally conceived as a multi-purpose space whose primary purpose was to preserve the library's collections, previously housed on the Place du XX Août.
B24-01Its location on the periphery of the site, beneath the area reserved for the hospital, was intended to avoid interfering with the urban development plan for the estate, which had not yet been defined at the time of construction. The lower floor, which receives very little natural light, has a concrete intermediate floor that serves as a landing for the staircase and elevator shaft. This floor is extended over the entire surface of the building by a light, removable structure. The second level is entirely glazed at the top, revealing the four imposing hyperbolic paraboloids that make up the roof.

B24-03Nearly all the spaces are equipped with removable metal shelving, designed by the architect himself. Typical of Sart-Tilman's early buildings, the bookshop's simple volumes reflect the modernist aesthetic in force at the time. The building's desire to blend into the landscape is also evident, as evidenced by the grass-covered roof terraces.
A boiler room and an electrical cabin are attached to the building, which was intended to operate autonomously at a time when neither the central boiler room nor the central control station had yet been built.
