To replace the old Botanical Institute in the city center (Lambert Noppius, 1883), the building at Sart-Tilman was entrusted to architect Roger Bastin.
The building is set on a steeply sloping ridge at the edge of the forest zone. The slope is cut by the creation of three terraces, which form the main building.

Incorporating the entrance, the first is designed for a reception area, herbarium and amphitheatre; the second, in addition to classrooms and a gallery for the collections, opens onto a garden.
Finally, the last terrace houses the technical rooms. The main volume is completed by two smaller blocks, which include experimental greenhouses (René Greisch, 1976).
The clean, geometric lines of the building are emphasized by the predominance of exposed concrete.

Inaugurated in September 2007, the work TOUR /AU, De, La, Le, Re, by Peter Downsbrough (2007, steel) maintains a formal relationship with the Institut de Botanique by Roger Bastin (1913-1986), whose clean lines it emphasizes.
This work by American-born artist Peter Downsbrough is in line with his minimalist installations, such as the one he proposed the following year near the Musée de la Vie wallonne in downtown Liège.
Pronounced aloud, the syllables that underline the composition offer a musicality that immediately evokes the French language. But beyond their sonority, these snatches of language seem to have been chosen for their ability to articulate the discourse. The decomposition of the word "autour" emphasizes the work's signage function, referring to the tower's architectural formula.
